    Satellite over cable? Just for one channel? Satellite TV locks you into a contract so if you are not happy with the service; you are stuck. It costs over $200 to get out of the contract even if you’re not satisfied! They charge you for service calls to come out to work on their service; most cable providers do not charge for a video service call. Satellite tv is not monitored by any government entity as cable is; so whatever they do to you…it’s done. Cable is monitored and have strict guidelines on how long an issue can last, they must do maintenance through the middle of the night so it affects less customers and they even pay into your local borough or municipality, giving back to your community. Do you really want an ugly dish hanging off the side of your home like a big Mickey Mouse ear and then have to sweep it off when it snows?

    Maybe your dad isn’t so cheap but has looked at the big picture on how much more it can cost to go that way.

    Let me respond to a few things posted above and then I’ll add my 2 cents.

    Agreed, which is why you do your homework first to make sure you want the service. Plenty of companies in other businesses have contracts so it’s not like it’s unusual or something.

    They charge you for service calls to come out to work on their service; most cable providers do not charge for a video service call.

    Not true. I have never been charged to have DTV come to my house. Plus they came the next day and not a week later like when I had cable.

    Satellite tv is not monitored by any government entity as cable is

    Good! The Govt monitors too much as it is. Ever since they got involved with cable the prices skyrocketed.

    Do you really want an ugly dish hanging off the side of your home like a big Mickey Mouse ear and then have to sweep it off when it snows?

    Please, it’s not that big and a little PAM sprayed on the dish will keep the snow from accumulating.

    Now to your question….The only way I can think of to get your dad to the Dish is if he’s into Sports, NFL and/or HD. DTV has the exlusive rights to NFL Ticket where you get every game in HD every Sunday and I think it’s still free if you sign up now. Plus DTV will have 100 HD channels by the end of September for $10, excluding the premium channels, which is like 80 more than cable if not more. See below for more info.

    DIRECTV also announced that it currently has signed agreements, or agreements in principle, with more than 70 major networks including:

    * A&E
    * Bravo
    * Cartoon Network
    * CNN
    * Food Network
    * FX
    * HGTV
    * MTV
    * National Geographic NFL Network
    * SciFi Channel
    * Speed
    * TBS
    * The History Channel
    * The Weather Channel
    * USA Network

    That’s about all I can think of. Good Luck!

    The reason you want DirecTV is for TFC and other ABS-CBN programming. Your family would get to watch programming from back home, such as ABS-CBN News, movies, comedies, dramas, sporting events, game shows, Wowowee, and other stuff. And, for $5 more, you can also get GMA programming. Programming your cable carrier probably doesn’t carry and won’t carry anytime soon.

    Your dad wants to expose the family to the culture of his homeland, and you can’t put a price on that.

    As for the other programming, I think, in many respects, DirecTV is competitive with cable when it comes to programming and service. So your argument comes down to to the value of having a window into Philippine life and culture.
