The rumor that SBC Communications is taking a peek at DirecTV has not been well received by Wall Street, according to a story in The Wall Street Journal. The article points to several analyst’s reports issued recently which denounce the economics of the deal and question SBC’s ability to execute a business that is unrelated to its core business. SBC’s apparent dilemma is that it cannot compete with the cable companies who offer programming, high-speed Internet access, and telephone service all in one package. In fact, nationwide, cable companies have gobbled up 2.5 million telephone customers, and that number is growing everyday. SBC’s has been hit hard by competition from cable companies and CLECs.

There is even more yet that they pile on you when you sign on with them. They throw in a free digital camera, so you can take a picture of all the other free stuff they give you to show to your friends.
