MLB-DirecTV deals whiffs diehard fans
July 4th, 2007
Over the past years, sports fanatics have been demanding more and more sports from TV broadcasters and only one TV programming service provider has had the decency to actually throw them a bone that has enough meat on it for hem to chew on. While other service providers only make sports just another part of their total overall choices in programming, DirecTV has chosen to make sports the back bone of their programming.
These exclusive channels are where you are going to go for all the big events that come around. While people who get their sports programming from other service providers have to get in their cars and go find a place to watch those events, you can sit back on your couch and watch them and record them on your digital video recorder, to store in your sports footage archive.
With DVR Powerd by TiVo you can also stop a live event any time you like, to use the bathroom or go to the fridge and when you return, the live game starts up right where you left off and all at the simple touch of a button on your remote. The Hughes receiver with DVR Powered by TiVo really lets you be the control freak when you sit down to watch sports.
This is taking one under the chin for local baseball fans who adore teams from afar, such as the Yankees and Red Sox. Have you noticed how A’s attendance spikes when those teams are in town? That’s no accident — there’s plenty of those fans around the Bay Area who will dearly miss their teams on cable TV. Strike one. And, in many cases, fans will sacrifice local programming through DirecTV to see their beloved squads. Strike two.
DirecTV put a carrot on the table and promised a new baseball channel, which begins in 2009, and MLB.com may excite a few fans. But the bigger market is clearly in cable, and Major League Baseball whiffed on perhaps making an even better deal for the future. Who’s doing the negotiating for Major League Baseball? Instead, Major League Baseball has succeeded in alienating its prime fan base. This is completely ignoring supply and demand, which, again, makes little sense.
When you join the DirecTV family of sports enthusiasts, one of the things that you will receive free of charge is a top of the line Hughes satellite receiver along with the complete system they give you. You have some choices and options with regards to that receiver and one of those options is DVR Powered by TiVo. With this you will have instant slow motion replay at your finger tips.
Build it and they will come, has been their reasoning behind all of this and so far it has worked, as true sports junkies have been choosing them hands down as the premier source for sports entertainment. Twenty-five channels of sports is the reason why. A wider variety of sports is the other reason why.
Strike three, you’re out!
