Open Question: Is it my internet service provider? my wireless router? my computer? or something else?
Several months ago my family switched internet service and television/cable providers from Dish Network to Time Warner, and with Time Warner came Road Runner. When we made the switch my parents forgot to check to see if the router they sent us was wireless enabled, it wasn’t. Without internet my laptop became useless. I set it aside, regularly cleaned it, and waited to get wireless again.
While I couldn’t use my laptop, I used the family desktop. On the desktop (aside from being slower) everything worked fine. Last night we set up the wireless router, and that’s where a ton of problems came up for me.
I am a gamer, and I like to run a Ventrilo and a Game (Fiesta Online) at the same time. On the desktop I had no problems, the only issues were that I had to share with the family, and I didn’t have a mic, but I could still hear the people I was playing with and play the game with little to no issues.
On the Laptop, however, I was getting regularly disconnected from the game and from ventrilo all night (Every 20-45 minutes).
This morning I can’t even get on the game, every time I try to log in, it stops responding. I also spent a fair amount of time trying to get internet explorer to respond. However, ventrilo works fine for some reason, just the occasional disconnection.
I don’t know what the problem is, is it the Internet Service Provider? Because I’ve been told that I need to slap my parents because Road Runner is horrible for wireless internet.
Is it my wireless router? Because other people have told me that it could very well just be that I need a new wireless router.
Is it my laptop? I doubt it is my laptop, I did have slight disconnection issues before we switched Service Providers and got a new Router, but never this bad before. I don’t know how it could be my laptops fault but I won’t eliminate it as one of the things that could be going wrong.
Or is it something else? I remember hearing that one of the problems might be two people in the house trying to use their respective computers at the same time.
It might also be a mix between any of these, because before the switch 3 people could be using computers with little to no difficulty, and I remember one of the first things I heard when I first received my laptop was that I might not be able to use it when somebody is using the desktop.
Also- is there any way to fix this problem depending on the cause? Do I need to switch internet service providers? Do I need to get a new laptop? Or do I need a new router? Is it possible that a router isn’t compatible with a certain internet service provider?
